Shingles: Architectural vs. 3-Tab

We often hear about "architectural shingles" and "3-tab shingles" when discussing roof replacements. What is the difference? There are three main points to consider – durability, aesthetic, and cost.

Durability

Architectural shingles have an average lifespan of 18 to 20 years (longer in less severe climates), while 3-tab shingles have an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years. Generally speaking, architectural shingles vastly outlast traditional 3-tab shingles, making them the more economical and safer choice for your home.

Aesthetic

Architectural shingles have more of a dimensional appearance because they are layered, have varying sizes, and are generally thicker than 3-tab shingles. On the other hand, 3-tab shingles have more of a flat, uniform, and one-dimensional appearance. Most customers prefer the textured look of architectural shingles over the more basic 3-tab shingles because they architectural shingles provide a luxurious aesthetic for your home.

Cost

Architectural shingles are generally more expensive than 3-tab shingles. The cost difference is minimal, however, considering the architectural shingles offer almost double the lifespan of 3-tab shingles. If you consider having to replace the 3-tab shingles on your roof at two times the rate of architectural shingles, the long-term savings definitely outweigh the upfront cost of architectural shingles.
